Monday update from CMBC and Partners
Weather update (supplied by Environment Agency)
Next few days continue to be wet with the heaviest rain from 6pm Tuesday into Wednesday morning but impact on Calderdale less likely than other areas. Most likely result is more active monitoring rather than issuing of warnings but potentially some flood alerts could be issued.
Community and business support
The Contact Centre is open tomorrow as usual for calls relating to flooding between 9am and 5pm on 01422 288001. Our out of hours phone line is available for emergencies outside these times on 01422 288000.
We are continuing to operate four community hubs:
Sowerby Bridge Leisure Centre, Sowerby Bridge
Best Practice Training (formerly Calder Valley Club), Mytholmroyd
Hebden Bridge Town Hall
Todmorden Town Hall
Enquiries regarding Elland continue to come through other hubs so it has been agreed that a hub is needed in Elland. Discussions are taking place on where this would be sited and what its role will be. An update will be provided in the next couple of days.
Lots of donations have been made and there are continuing issues with storing these. There is a particular surplus of clothing and bedding so we are telling the public we have enough and asking them to check with hubs (via the Contact Centre) to determine what’s required at each hub before donating anything. Excess clothing may be provided to charity shops supporting the flooding response.
We are arranging transport requirements for schools. We have informed schools; they have informed parents and we will confirm it all again tomorrow before they start returning on Tuesday and Wednesday.
We are updating our FAQs regularly as the situation develops and these are a good source of information for residents and businesses. You can find the latest version here.http://www.calderdale.gov.uk/v2/emergencies…
Clean up and recovery
Sandbags – Highways have plenty of stocks of sandbags (both large and small) and stocks (which were depleted) have now been replenished.
Teams have been out this morning emptying full skips and replacing them. Additional skips are also being sourced.
Environmental Health have 100 dehumidifiers available for households and can invest in more if required. People are already calling the Council’s contact centre following social media messages and the hubs are also now passing on this information
Police have asked for the Council’s support with asking people to dispose of white goods through the Council, not people claiming to be collectors. This is also the case for scrap metal. Messages asking residents to organise this via the Contact Centre will be going out through the usual channels.
At Scout Road letters have been sent out to warn residents of the risk of returning to their properties.
There are no working ATMs in Hebden Bridge and there are some problems in Mytholmroyd. We have tried to get mobile ATMs delivered without success but have made contact with the banks and hopefully will have an update in the next day or so.
The Environment Agency was concerned about the White Sands travel agents building in Mytholmroyd which needed temporary flood defences to be placed around it. The defences were put in place but shortened so they were still able to do their job but also allow access to the businesses in the same area.
Bridges
Elland Bridge will be closed for approximately 12 months as its listed building status will affect the time taken for repairs. Diversions are in place for vehicles and there is a temporary footbridge in place for pedestrians. This footbridge was working ok this morning and its widening today will further improve this. The Canal & River Trust carried out the widening this afternoon and it is now 1.5m wide.
Police were at Elland Bridge during the morning rush hour to help direct people. Diversions are also in place and they were working successfully according to the police. Messages about using alternative routes, delaying journeys and using trains are continuing via social media and the website
The Environment Agency has been clearing Walsden Bridge today but EA liaising with Network Rail as it is their bridge.
Daily inspection continues at Wakefield Bridge. To prevent erosion of the bridge foundations, sandbags need to be placed but access is difficult so a crane is required – this is likely to happen next week.
At Cromwell Bottom the bridge is part collapsed. Highways working with Waste to discuss fully collapsing the bridge. They will be working with Northern Power as electric cables are believed to be trapped under the collapsed part of the bridge.
There is no movement of Brighouse Bridge. Divers visited the site at the weekend and going back on Tuesday 5 (subject to river levels)
